What is new energy storage?
The so-called new energy storage refers to other energy storage technology routes other than pumped storage, among which electrochemical energy storage represented by lithium-ion batteries is the main one.
Since the beginning of 2023, the new energy storage industry has ushered in a peak of expansion.
Why is new energy storage so popular all of a sudden? The real inflection point can be traced back to 2021.
At that time, in order to ensure the stability of the power grid and solve the problem of wind and wind power consumption, "mandatory allocation and storage" came into being, and many local governments put forward requirements for the construction of energy storage for new wind power projects.
As the new energy storage industry enters the fast lane of large-scale development, the special battery for energy storage has also moved from the earlier "supporting role" to the "protagonist".
Battery companies such as CATL, BYD, and EVE Lithium Energy have all released battery products dedicated to energy storage. Energy storage cells are iterating toward large capacity and low cost.
In the early days of energy storage batteries, the batteries were mainly tens to 100AH. By 2021, most manufacturers are already pushing batteries of 280AH-300AH or more.
Why are battery manufacturers scrambling for high-capacity batteries?
The larger the capacity of a single battery cell, the fewer the number of battery cells and components used in system integration, and at the same time, it can reduce the use of energy storage system connectors, thereby reducing costs.
But is the battery capacity really bigger the better?
Large-capacity batteries definitely have an advantage in reducing the cost of the energy storage system, but it still depends on the actual effect of the battery after operation. The capacity of a single battery cell is now getting bigger and bigger, but we cannot unilaterally pursue higher and higher energy densities. The advantage of large-capacity cells is that it can increase energy density and reduce unit cost. However, the characteristics of electrochemical energy storage are that the higher the temperature, the shorter the life. How to increase the energy density without sacrificing life and safety is the key.

Xiamen, China – May 28, 2026. CATL has officially opened a major new testing facility in Xiamen. Called the Energy Storage Validation Laboratory (ESVL), the site aims to help move the global energy storage industry toward a new standard of real-world, system-level testing before projects are deployed. Covering 10 hectares and built with an investment of about 3 billion yuan (approx. $440 million USD), the company says it is the world’s largest and most comprehensive one-stop testing platform for energy storage systems. CATL intends to run it as an open facility, available for use by the wider industry worldwide.
