Across Northern Europe, cities are racing to meet aggressive decarbonization targets while addressing the strain of electric vehicle (EV) adoption on legacy power grids. A landmark collaboration in Malmö, Sweden, has delivered a replicable solution: reimagining underutilized urban parking infrastructure as active, grid-supportive clean energy hubs. The Parkside Mobility Hub, located in Malmö’s sustainability-focused Hyllie district, brings together global energy technology leader Sungrow, municipal parking operator Parkering Malmö, and clean energy integrator Truxco Energy to turn a 430-space public parking structure into a self-sufficient decentralized energy node.

Cross-Sector Collaboration Delivers a Multi-Functional Urban Energy Solution

Sungrow supplied its industry-leading commercial and industrial (C&I) PowerStack liquid-cooled energy storage system (ESS) and SG33CX string inverters for the project, a combination engineered to deliver maximum efficiency in dense urban environments. The installation converts the parking facility into a distributed generation asset, capturing and storing solar energy during peak production hours to deliver reliable power during overcast conditions or periods of high grid demand.
“Our mission is to deliver universal access to clean energy, whether in utility-scale solar farms or space-constrained urban settings where every square meter delivers value,” noted Tony Granholm, Partner Success Manager for the Nordics at Sungrow. “Leveraging our PowerStack ESS alongside Truxco Energy’s AI-driven energy management platform, we enable seamless solar energy storage during peak sunshine and guaranteed grid resilience through variable weather conditions.”

A Climate-First Landmark Aligned With Malmö’s 2030 Decarbonization Goals

Beyond its core energy and mobility functions, the Parkside Mobility Hub is designed as a community-centric asset aligned with Malmö’s strict 2030 climate roadmap and LFM30 sustainability benchmarks. The structure integrates façade-mounted photovoltaic glass, climate-positive building materials including mass timber, recycled steel, and low-carbon concrete, and delivers critical public amenities: over 200 EV-ready parking bays, a panoramic rooftop access staircase, and an outdoor fitness area, expanding its value far beyond conventional parking infrastructure.
“We view our parking facilities as core contributors to Malmö’s green transition, evolving into local energy nodes that strengthen grid stability and expand access to renewable power,” said Almir Hodzic, CEO of Parkering Malmö. “Amid widespread challenges with energy affordability, on-site energy storage is critical to future-proofing our municipal assets for the long term.”

Intelligent Tech Stack Optimizes Performance, Safety and Reliability

At the heart of the hub’s energy infrastructure are four Sungrow PowerStack liquid-cooled ESS units, purpose-built for C&I applications, delivering a total 916 kWh storage capacity to optimize solar self-consumption and deliver real-time grid support. Paired with the system are Sungrow’s SG33CX multi-MPPT string inverters, which reach a peak efficiency of 98.7% and offer smart management functionality fully compatible with bifacial PV modules.
The entire installation is orchestrated via Truxco Energy’s proprietary AI-powered energy management platform, which enables predictive operations, early fault detection, and dynamic balancing of solar generation, energy storage, and EV charging demand. The result is a fire-safe, operationally robust energy solution that aligns seamlessly with the project’s architectural design standards.
“This project is a perfect example of how we unify design, technology, and sustainability into a single, cohesive solution,” commented Modi Nezami, Project Manager at Truxco Energy, who led the technical integration. “Combining Sungrow’s intelligent ESS with our AI management platform, we can identify and address potential performance deviations early, ensuring consistent safety and efficiency across the system.”

A Replicable Blueprint for Urban Decentralized Energy Transition

The Parkside Mobility Hub sets a new paradigm for urban infrastructure: converting passive parking structures into active, revenue-generating energy assets that accelerate municipal decarbonization while reducing strain on central power grids. The project also demonstrates how behind-the-meter energy storage can enable mass EV adoption without costly, time-consuming grid upgrades.
The Nordic region remains a strategic focus for Sungrow, which has established local offices in Stockholm and Copenhagen with dedicated teams to address the region’s unique climate conditions and energy transition requirements. With a full portfolio of utility-scale solar, residential energy solutions, and C&I storage systems, Sungrow has solidified its position as a leading technology partner for energy transition projects across Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland.
